Is it time to replace your furnace?
The life expectancy of a furnace can be up to 25 years or more. Realistically, the average furnace will give you 15 to 20 years of service with minimal trouble.
So when is the right time to replace your furnace?
In most cases homeowners prolong replacing their furnace because they view this as an unnecessary and costly investment. Unfortunately, your furnace may fail at an inopportune time, leading to expensive repair costs and sometimes compromised quality. Replacing an old inefficient furnace with today’s high efficient models will produce considerable savings and improved home comfort.
High-efficiency furnaces are the most energy-efficient furnaces available on the market today. The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is 90% or higher. They use up to 38% less natural gas than an older gas furnace, typically operating at about 60-65% efficiency. Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency is indicated as a percentage. Your furnace’s AFUE tells you how much energy is being converted to heat. For example, an AFUE of 90 means that 90% of the fuel is being used to warm your home, while the other 10% escapes as exhaust with the combustion gases. The higher the AFUE,the more efficient the unit. Typically, Canadian homes built prior to 1990 will have standard or mid-efficiency furnaces, while homes built after 1990 may have mid or high-efficiency furnaces. The EnerGuide label is very important in helping consumers choose an energy efficient product. An EnerGuide label with the furnace’s AFUE rating is usually shown on the back page of manufacturers’ brochures. Included on the EnerGuide label is a rating scale showing the range of efficiencies for gas furnaces on the market.
The basic concept behind today’s high-efficiency furnace is that they use an additional heat exchange surface to cool and condense the combustion gases, causing them to liquefy and release more heat for the home. The small amount of wastewater produced by this process is piped to a floor drain.
The correct size will help the furnace operate efficiently, last longer, and save you money. Let Dynamic Climate Control help you make the right furnace choice and get you on the path to efficient heating and comfort.
